*Moms, you are invited to come to first grade with your child this Friday, May 7 between 8:00-8:30 A.M. Your child will serve you a muffin and some orange juice and read you something very special. Then you may go about your business, including looking forward to having a happy Mother’s Day.

**Parents, you are also invited to attend our National Day of Prayer service Thursday at 8:20 A.M. in the church.

***Grades 1-3 are preparing their spring musical, Back to the Creekbank, which will be presented in the church on Thursday, May 27 at 7:00 P.M. All of the first graders have special parts which I will be helping them learn.

***Jason read Snoopy’s journal this morning. Snoopy will visit Aidan Friday.

****Connor is our Star of the Week. Ashley will take her poster home Friday.

Monday Evening

1. Memorize: Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Psalm 95:1 You will say your memory Friday morning.

2. Read Wonders pp. 53-63.

3. Do math fact homework 96B.

4. Study your spelling words:

Your test will be Friday.

Wednesday Evening

1. Read Wonders pp. 74-93.

2. Do math fact homework 100.

3. Study your spelling words.

Thursday Evening

1. Read Wonders pp. 94-108.

2. Do math homework 100B.

3. Study your spelling words and your memory verse.

4. Bring your mom to school tomorrow morning.

1. Plan which books to read

First Grade Reading Challenge: April 12-May 14

We are beginning a reading challenge today. I would like each child to read as many books as possible between now and Friday, May 14. This is not a race or a contest, but an enjoyable way to keep your child reading. It is fine if your child reads 25 or 100 books. Sign the “Shhh! I’m Reading” certificate with your child tonight and hang it on the refrigerator or in your child’s room. Help your child pick out the first book to read. If your child doesn’t have a library card, this would be an excellent time to get one.

Challenge Rules

• Read a book to your mom or dad, big brother or sister, grandma or baby-sitter, or anyone who cares for you. (Each book must be at your child’s reading level. Page count does not matter. Your child should read books he/she can read fairly well independently, asking for help on not more than three or four words a page.) Reading from your reading book for homework does not count for the challenge. You may read books from home, the school library and your public library. You may borrow books from our bookshelf at school if you bring them back the next day. You may also read books during free time at school.

• When you finish a book, fill out a reading ticket and have your parents sign it. Put the signed ticket in our bucket at school. (Parents, if your child is reading chapter books, 20 pages equal 1 ticket.) Each time you finish reading 5 books, “you” will move a space on our reading road. You will receive small awards along the way when you have read 25, 50, 75 and 100 books.

• Children, remember to fill out tickets for the books you read at the listening center and the books you read for the accelerated reading program.

• Parents, show your children that it’s fun to read in “down” time—in the car, sitting in the dentist’s office, etc. Continue to keep up with daily reading homework and reading your child a bedtime story for pleasure.

• On Friday, May 14 we will enjoy a World-Famous-Reading-Challenge-Ice-Cream Party.

Welcome to First Grade

Welcome to Miss Geisler's Homework and News blog. This will be my tenth year teaching at Abiding Savior--ten years of great blessings! The nine years before that were spent as children's and family book editor at Concordia Publishing House in St. Louis, the publisher of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. I still enjoy freelance writing ministry. I began my church ministry at Ascension Lutheran School in Torrance, California where I taught various combinations of grades one, two, three and four. First grade is definitely the best! I also help with church music and love to play the organ.

I will be sending a weekly homework and news letter home each Monday (and the first day of school) in your child's folder. Please go over it with your child and follow it closely so your child is prepared each day and has time to practice our new concepts. I will post the same letter on this blog each week.
